With spring just around the corner, our staff at Central Bucks Learning Academy has put together a series of helpful hints for students preparing for the SAT and ACT exams. Over the next couple of weeks, these posts will cover a variety of topics such as test anxiety, skills, and strategies to conquer even the most difficult questions.
5 Tips to Maximize Your Reading SAT or ACT Scores
Get to know the test structure. .
Understanding exam structure is paramount to improving test scores. Don’t go into the exam blind, do your research! Depending on whether you take the SAT or ACT exam, you’ll find a series of passages ranging from prose fiction, to humanities, or even science. Both exams will feature a variety of questions that test your understanding of the basic themes, vocabulary in context, and line specific questions. One aspect of the test that many students struggle to understand is that the passages do not need to be completed in order. Sometimes it’s best to save your weakest passage for last. This strategy allows struggling test takers to accumulate more points on the passages that fit their skill set, rather than waste precious time on troublesome questions. Pick the right reading strategy for you.
Every student is different, and there are many different ways to approach a reading passage. Some experts have their process of choice, but ultimately, you need to understand what works best for you! Some students choose to read the entire passage and then move on to the questions, while other students who struggle with reading comprehension may choose to work through the passage in chunks, answering questions along the way. Do a little research and try a couple different methods to see what works best for you. If needed, the tutors at Central Bucks Learning Academy are always available to answer your questions and provide the help you need.
Comfort with time constraints.
For many students, answering the questions on these reading exams correctly can be a difficult task. Unfortunately, both the SAT and ACT exams, place time constraints on their test takers to add to the difficulty and place additional stress on the student. One of the best ways to gain confidence and speed on these exams is to simulate a timed testing situation. Whether you’re working on an entire reading test, or practicing with one passage at a time, try to make it a timed stress test! Ultimately, becoming comfortable with timed tests and developing your own internal clock can pay wonderful dividends in increasing your reading scores. At Central Bucks Learning Academy, we also recommend that you purchase a cheap digital watch for test day to help monitor your pace on exam day.
Understand what the question is asking.
SAT questions are intentionally written to confuse and trap students into selecting an incorrect answer. Frustrating to even the most academic student, these traps appear in a variety of ways, such as an extremely wordy question, using the words such as “least” or “not”, or using obscure vocabulary. The best way to improve your score on the critical reading portion of the exam is to pay very close attention to what the question is asking you and what specific evidence is in the text. We always recommend that students mark up the questions with underlines, circles, and boxes to help identify the key features of each question..
Practice, Practice, Practice!
Ultimately, there is no substitute for old-fashioned hard work. There are numerous publishing companies that have compiled a series of practice tests to help students prepare for the exam. Test takers should put together a comprehensive study plan, including a target score appropriate for their abilities. Keep in mind, nothing defeats or frustrates a child more than an unattainable goal. While taking these practice exams, students should actively review any question they are uncertain about, even if they got it right. Most of these study aids provide answer explanations for each practice exam they produce. If the information is available, use it! For students to make a substantial improvement in their score, they need to internalize the information and work on their weaknesses.
